Biceps tendonitis, also known as bicipital tendonitis, is inflammation in the main tendon of the upper arm that attaches the top of the biceps muscle to the shoulder. The most common cause is overuse from certain types of work or sports activities, like tennis, weightlifting and baseball.

Biceps tendonitis usually develops over time from repeated wear and tear, but can also happen suddenly from a direct injury like fall on the shoulder. The biceps tendon may also become inflamed or irritated in response to other problems in the shoulder, such as rotator cuff tears, impingement, or instability.

Overhand throwing places extremely high stresses on the shoulder, specifically to the anatomy that keeps the shoulder stable. In throwing athletes, these high stresses are repeated many times and can lead to a wide range of overuse injuries.

Although throwing injuries in the shoulder most commonly occur in baseball pitchers, they can be seen in any athlete who participates in sports that require repetitive overhand motions, such as volleyball, tennis, and some track and field events. These injuries are seen most frequently in weight lifting, throwing sports like baseball, softball, tennis, in rowing and due to fall on outstretched hand.

What are the symptoms?

Patients usually report the feeling of a deep ache directly in the front and top of the shoulder. The ache may also feel down into the main part of the biceps muscle in front of the upper arm.

Pain is usually made worse with moving the arm overhead and resting the shoulder generally eases pain. The effected arm may feel weak when attempt to bend the elbow or when twisting the forearm into palm up position. A catching or slipping sensation felt near the top of the biceps muscle may suggest a tear of the ligament.

Most times athletes are told that they need surgery to fix their sports injuries. But surgery is not the answer for most of the sports injuries, and may actually never help you regain your performance to the level you were prior to the injury.

PRP and Stem Cell Treatments can help:

Patients coping with sports injuries, tendon strains, sprained ligaments, muscle injuries, arthritis and more, will be comforted to know that surgery is not the only option of treatment available to them. We encourage the patients to walk the same day and most experience almost no downtime after our procedures whatsoever.
